When running any type of business, or home office, you will require an arsenal of tools to keep things running
as efficiently as possible. One of the less talked about but important pieces of equipment are paper
trimmers. Unfortunately even the tools that you need will require you to understand them in detail in
order for you to choose the best one for your situation.
Choosing the right paper trimmer is just as important as choosing the proper paper for handouts at a special
presentation. They range in price from $30 all the way up to a couple hundred dollars but one will save you more
time in the long run.
There are different types of cutting machines that you need to be familiar with. Some are designed for cutting
and others for trimming. So let’s look at the two main types here:
1. As archaic as it sounds, the guillotine cutter, or paper cutter, should be used to cut big stacks of
paper. The have the cutting power to slice through large volumes of paper at one time. Basically how it works is
that you place the paper on the unit, line it up to the proper size, and bring the large cutting handle down. You
should try to keep the slicing action smooth and in one motion. This will lead to nicely cut paper without frizzy
ends or tapered paper. You can cut a wide range of papers in to an assortment of sizes which makes guillotine
paper cutters useful in business offices and schools.

2. Paper trimmers usually have a rounded blade inside a casing so you don’t accidently cut yourself. You
may also find that these are called rotary cutters in the bigger office supply stores. These can also be used like
the guillotine cutter but with less volume of paper. They are more designed to cut a few pages at a time. Most
often these are used in photo shops, some schools, and at home. Also, these are typically less expensive than their
heavy cutting counterparts. You can easily find a good trimmer under $50 at amazon.com or another similar shopping
site.

So when choosing between the different types of paper trimmers it will almost be #1 for
business and #2 for home and home offices. Not only will a guillotine paper cutter be a bit over kill for home,
they are considerably more expensive than the paper trimmers you can find at an office supply store.
